TMHF's Texas Living History Day -- 2008

September 27:  TFS members Jean and Lew SchnitzCarolyn Arrington, Herb Arbuckle, and Lee and Acayla Haile represented TFS at the Texas Music Heritage Foundation’s “Texas Living History Day” on the Kerrville campus of Schreiner University.  (see their website: http://www.texasheritagemusic.org/ ) Our thanks to them for being wonderful entertainers and panelists at the event.
Jean reports that it was fun and better than ever this year. There were no tents this year, so the TFS group set up under a nice shade tree near a chuck wagon on the far side of the creek. Jean, Lew and Carolyn spent the morning showing dozens (even hundreds) of children old time musical instruments. "We played and sang for them and WITH them. Some of the groups were really enthusiastic singers."

Jean played the hammered dulcimer, and Carolyn played the guitar, fiddle, mountain dulcimer, and pickin' stick (not all at the same time). They "played and sang and talked and ate biscuits from the chuck wagon" until the school busses took the children away at about 2:30 p.m.

Jean chaired the panel discussion in the auditorium. The subject was "The Music of Texas.

Herb Arbuckle presented a research paper with some stories about Bob Wills and his band. He also led a discussion of the nonsense songs that were popular during the Great Depression and during World War II.

Lee and Acayla sang a song or two and Carolyn Arrington gave a presentation about styles of fiddle music popular in Texas.  We had a general discussion about the various types of music festivals that abound in Texas, including dulcimer festivals, bluegrass festivals, old fiddlers contests, Czech fests and Wurstfests, and such as that. Audience participation was wonderful throughout the program.

We thank the Texas Heritage Music Foundation for the opportunity to share Texas folk music with such an appreciative group again this year.
