TMHF Texas Living History Day -- 2007
September 28: The Texas Folklore Society was well represented at the Texas Music Heritage Foundation’s “Texas Living History Day” on the Kerrville campus of Schreiner University.  (see their website: http://www.texasheritagemusic.org/ ) Our kudos to TFS members Jean SchnitzHerb Arbuckle, and Lee and Acayla Haile for being wonderful entertainers and panelists at the event.
Jean reports that it was fun and well worth spending a very long day in the very hot Kerrville sun. From the TFS booth they talked about folklore and entertained the school children, teachers, and sponsors with music and stories.  Texas Living History Day 2007

Lee drew crowds with this picking and singing, and Jean gave the kids some hands-on dulcimer-playing experiences.

The Panel Discussion on folklore, emceed by Jean, had a lively general discussion.  Jean said, “Lee and Acayla and Herb were wonderful contributors to that discussion and then Herb took the floor with his folksy sayings and led into his paper about the 'Corrido of Gregorio Cortez.' The audience loved it and he got several ovations before he got through.  He sang a verse in Spanish and Kathleen translated it in English before he went to the next one.  Texas Living History Day -- 2007
That opened up discussions about storytelling and ballads and that sort of thing so Lee and Acayla each told an entertaining story or two.”  A discussion about Texas music ended with everybody “singing three verses of 'Beautiful Texas' accompanied by none other than the Light Crust Doughboys (courtesy of the CD Patrick gave me awhile back).  I think folks got a kick out of that.”
