Kay Arnold
did the
coordination and planning again this year for the Texas Folklore Society's participation in the
Texas Book Festival
(October 31-Nov. 1) on the Capitol grounds in Austin.
When she was called away at the last minute for a family emergency,
Elaine Davenport and Carol Hanson were prepared to step
in and lead the effort. A team of dedicated
members: Charles Rodenberger, Elizabeth and
Jack Duncan, Lucy West, Meredith Abarca, Jean
and Lew Schnitz, Margaret Cox, Debra and Dow Cox,
Rollo Newsom, and Vicky Rose worked in shifts,
sharing their enthusiasm for the Texas Folklore Society and
encouraging people to join. They reported having a fun time, too;
Elaine said it was like a mini TFS meeting. She reported the
following:
20 new memberships (including 2 in the Paisano
Grande category)
13 of the 20 memberships were paid with credit
cards. "Our ability to take credit cards was a big deal."
"KLBJ-AM, an Austin talk radio station,
interviewed the team at the booth on Saturday morning. We ran out of
brochures, but made do with photocopies and a LOT of chin music.
Vicky brought a basket of fresh peppers from her garden, which
caught the attention of many passers-by. Charles in his white
Stetson played the Texas Ranger he looked like, pointing his finger
at people and saying they NEEDED to join the Texas Folklore Society.
Lucy was the top sales person, I think, culminating her
informational spiel by pushing a membership form and pen under the
person's nose."
Many thanks to
the TEAM for their hard work.
