| What is Folklore?
Folklore is the traditional knowledge of a culture. Although it can
be closely related to history at times, folklore concerns the things
about a group that are not usually found in historical records.
There are five characteristics which folklorists use to distinguish
what is or is not considered folklore:
- Oral
- Traditional
- Variable
- Anonymous
- Formulaic
That is, folklore is passed on by word of mouth according to
tradition. It varies from one group to the next, and even among the
same group over time. Its transmission establishes a degree of
separation from the original author or creator. And, it follows a
common pattern or form.
